Night View Near My Place
Chris and I walked out to the harbour after dinner one night during our mini vacation and I took a picture of the skyline. Clear skies -- pretty rare in my part of the world.
We talked a lot about a lot of things during this vacation and one of them was 'What should we do first?' Here's what's on our plate: wedding, trip, house.
Obviously, we don't have pots and pots of gold. Basically, we've calculated that the wedding and the trip alone will clear out both of our accounts. But the house is also very important as an investment plan................so....are we going to start pulling bunnies out of our hats? Not quite, according to Chris.
Chris: The trip is a must. It's something we will regret if we don't travel. It's something that will be life changing
Z: How about we skip the wedding? I just want the ring :D
C: looks at me
Z: I just feel like the wedding is for other people....not for us....
C: I feel like the wedding is like homework for you
Z: yeah...a bit....
C: I think we can first invest in a very small house.
Z: sure!
C: I just think, a lot of people buy the house because it makes them feel more secure about the future. If we buy the house now as an investment, we actually won't live in it until maybe 20 years. If that's the case, then what is the point? It's something that we don't get to enjoy.
C: But the trip, that is something for us now. Who knows what will happen to us 20 years from now? How do we know we won't be able to buy the house 20 years later even if it will be more expensive? How do we know we won't be able to afford it?
I think that is such a god point. Yes, it is important to invest in a house for the future. Of course. But we do that at the expense of now - the present. So, I get Chris' point and I agree. Yes, there is a price to pay....but it doesn't mean throwing our dreams away (which is something that we can do now) for the sake of a more 'certain' future.
So smart!
