I saw something I liked on the news last night.
I teach public administration and I dabble in some politics - only a little. I'm generally not a very political person, which most people find surprising. After all, I work in the department of Politics and Public Administration.
To make a very long story short, I studied politics in university and my roommates would always ask me for political opinions or analyze for them a political situation = =" It just baffled me. In any case......
We will have an election soon, but we don't have a democratic system. Our "CEO", so to say, is chosen by a small group of 800 elite electors who are supposed to represent the rest of the 6 and something million of us non-elites. Usually, we only get one candidate running, so by default, he wins.
This time, though, we have two candidates and both of them are legitimate candidates. What I saw on the news last night was exactly the kind of stuff that I would see during election time in democracies: election platforms, policy positions, PR, interviews with news anchors......all of the interesting things I didn't know I miss since moving here.
I was really impressed. It gave me hope. Maybe, just maybe, we would have that kind of politics too. If that ever happens, then I would really have something to talk about in lectures =)
